The raingardens along Aura Brook are engineered to capture and filter stormwater runoff naturally. Using a variety of native plants, these gardens slow water flow, allowing sediments and pollutants to settle while plants absorb excess nutrients. This filtration process helps maintain clean waterways, reduces litter, and prevents nutrient overload. Beyond their functional benefits, raingardens enhance the landscape with lush, green scenery that encourages residents to enjoy the outdoors.
Bioretention basins are a key component of Aura Brook’s stormwater management system. These shallow, landscaped depressions contain specialized soil and vegetation to filter water naturally. As stormwater passes through, contaminants are trapped and nutrients absorbed, reducing the impact on the brook and surrounding ecosystem. By mimicking natural filtration processes, bioretention basins help ensure the health and clarity of local waterways while managing urban runoff effectively.
Aura Brook is built to handle heavy rainfall and large-scale water events. The underpass, which doubles as a walkway during dry periods, is engineered to safely accommodate rising water during significant rain events. Once culverts under the road reach capacity, excess water can flow into the underpass, preventing flooding in surrounding areas. This innovative design protects both the landscape and the community, though residents should always exercise caution and avoid flooded areas.
Aura Brook supports a diverse range of Sunshine Coast native plants, including Eucalypts, Melaleucas, Banksias, Boobiallas, Lomandras, and Grevilleas. This rich vegetation provides essential feeding, breeding, and resting areas for local wildlife, helping to create a thriving and balanced ecosystem.
