Aura: A Sustainable Community Shaping a Greener Future

At Stockland, sustainability is more than a commitment—it’s a core part of how communities like Aura are planned and developed. Through thoughtful land management, innovative environmental initiatives, and a focus on reducing ecological impact, Stockland is creating vibrant spaces that support both people and nature.

Known as the City of Colour, Aura stands out as a leader in sustainable urban living. With thousands of native Australian trees, abundant green corridors, and interconnected walking and cycling paths, the community encourages residents to embrace an active, outdoor lifestyle while living harmoniously with nature.

Extensive Green Spaces for a Healthy Lifestyle

Aura offers residents access to hundreds of hectares of open green space. Mark Stephens, Stockland’s Senior Environment and Community Development Manager, highlights Aura as a model of sustainable community development not just within Stockland’s portfolio but across Australia.

“Aura is designed around nature. Every aspect of the city reflects careful conservation planning to protect this beautiful part of the Sunshine Coast for generations,” Stephens explains.

Aura by the Numbers: Sustainability in Action
  • Nearly a third of Aura’s total area—around 700 hectares—is dedicated to conservation, including a 400-hectare park with forest trails for mountain biking and ecological walks. A 7-hectare remnant blackbutt forest has been preserved as a key natural asset.
  • The conservation zones also serve as a ‘living laboratory’ for local schools, teaching students about native wildlife, including the Wallum Sedge Frog, and hands-on conservation practices. Over 150 hectares of wetlands have been established to provide critical habitat for this vulnerable species.
  • Underpasses beneath major roads ensure safe movement for wildlife, connecting habitats across the community.
Sustainable Planning Through Collaboration

Aura’s green identity stems from meticulous urban planning and collaboration among builders, landscape architects, and town planners. Place Design Group, one of the landscape architecture teams, has played a key role in shaping Aura’s lush environment:

Baringa
  • More than 4,000 trees planted across parks, streets, and environmental zones
  • 100 hectares of invasive weeds removed, with 20% regenerated
  • Around 750,000 understorey plants established in Baringa alone
Nirimba
  • Approximately 5,000 trees planted in key precincts
  • Over 1.1 million understorey plants added, due to large water quality basins in the area
Bells Creek Arterial Road
  • Over 3,300 trees planted along road edges and embankments
  • More than 392,000 understorey plants added

Native planting is prioritised to ensure vegetation thrives with minimal maintenance, promoting long-term sustainability and reducing environmental impact. Place Design Group reports that over 97% of vegetation planted across Aura is native, creating diverse habitats and resilient green spaces.

Benefits for Residents and Nature

The abundance of native plants and green spaces in Aura is designed to enhance community wellbeing, providing areas for relaxation, recreation, and connection with the natural environment. By integrating conservation with urban development, Aura sets a benchmark for sustainable living while protecting local ecosystems.

With its strong focus on sustainability, conservation, and liveability, Aura truly lives up to its reputation as a green city. Stockland continues to ensure that every aspect of the community contributes to a vibrant, environmentally responsible future.
